A MESSAGE FROM CAT
Hi there! My name is Cat Shoemaker and I am hiking the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis (CF). CF is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. I am hiking to honor my friend Shelby who is 27 and living with CF.

When a group of parents started the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 1955, there were no treatments for cystic fibrosis. These parents set their sights high -- to advance understanding of this little-known disease, to create new treatments and specialized care for their children, and to find a cure. At that time, children with CF were not expected to live past elementary school.  Today, more than 30,000 people in the United States are living with CF and over half of the population is over the age of 18.

Cystic fibrosis is a complex disease and the types and severity of symptoms can differ widely from person to person. Many different factors, such as age of diagnosis, can affect an individual's health and the course of the disease. Therefore, although treatment plans can contain many of the same elements, they are tailored to each individual's unique circumstances.

I am raising money on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment, and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care.
